Course Description
This two-day course will introduce participants to the ASME B31.3 Process Piping Code. The Code provides requirements for the design, fabrication, examination and testing of metallic piping systems designed for the wide variety of fluid services used in the process industries. Selection of materials, pipe, valves and fittings will be discussed. Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of the code (not included in course fees) to the sessions. 

For participants interested in expanding their ASME B31.3 Code knowledge, a two-day "Advanced ASME B31.3 Process Piping Code" course is typically scheduled immediately following this course.

Don Frikken has worked in the process industry for 35 years; working on a wide range of activities including piping and mechanical design, project engineering, and development of engineering standards, specializing in piping design. Don is a member of several ASME committees and is past Chair of the ASME B31.3.

Good high level overview of the code

I personally found this course to be of great value. After attempting to apply the code for about 1 year from my own interpretations, it was very beneficial to have an expert clarify parts of it as well as expose me to sections I did not previously know. The first 2 days were the introductory course and covered more basic topics such as code definitions and general statements of requirements relating to pipe/fitting selection, materials, pressure design, valve selection, intro to flexibility, fab and install, inspection/examination/testing, and other systems (instruments, pressure relieving, etc.). The second 2 days covered the more advanced topics of the code, mainly covering calculations of the various type of loads to consider (pressure, sustained, and displacement), types of supports and where to locate them, various flexibility considerations, reaction forces exerted on equipment, supports, and flanges from adjacent piping, performing flexibility analysis by hand and using Caesar, and designing with expansion joints. Other topics such as non-metallic piping systems, cat M fluid service, high pressure piping, API 570 requirements, B31.1 requirements, and underground piping were touched on in lesser detail (no calculation examples on these topics).

I found the over all coarse very in formative and having the coarse and piping code to fall back onto as needed. Also instructor gave us his contact info if any questions or needing assistance to clarify code requiremts.
